Over a month ago, I checked out The Kimchi Project along with a few food bloggers. I’ve heard about this new Asian Fusion cafe/restaurant and I was quite excited to try it. Thanks to the lovely Tiffany of Heartshrooms, I had my first dining experience here.
First of all, this place is like a breath of fresh air from the busy Lorne Street. You wouldn’t expect the more relaxed vibe in the backyard dining area. It’s covered by a glass roof and adorned by pretty lights. It is definitely a nice surprise from the cafe front.
We went on a Thursday night and the place was absolutely packed. People have heard of this cool place as it was bustling. The menu is small which is not a bad thing. If there are any more options, it would’ve been a lot harder to choose what to order.
We started with some drinks. I’ve heard their Soju Cocktails are great but we had a selection of juices and cocktails.
For food, we couldn’t pass up trying the Kimchi Waffle Fries ($16).
I love waffle fries and to have it topped with kimchi that’s not too spicy for my very mild tastebuds and bacon, I couldn’t really complain. I understand why this is a popular item in their menu.
Next up were the baos ($10 each and $12 for the soft shell crab).
They were served in this wooden chopping board and looked really nice.
The photo above is the Soft Shell Crab Bao which was not mine as I got the Tempura Chicken Bao. However, it was too dark and I was too hungry to take photos.
My bao was unfortunately, not the best in my opinion. I’ve tried better buns before and this didn’t taste like it was freshly made as it wasn’t as soft as I’d like it to be. The tempura chicken was nice but I also wish there was more sauce.
As the baos were just ok, I’d recommend ordering other dishes from their menu such as the Ssam ($25).
These are basically lettuce cups with different meats such as slow cooked pork belly, bulgogi and gochujang chicken.
These were great and our whole group enjoyed this the most. I didn’t think lettuce cups were exciting but these tasted fresh and I’d love to have one right now.
Our last dish of the night was the Two-ways Chicken $32.50.
This basically has grilled chicken and sweet gochujang chicken. This was also really nice and would order again if I go back to this place. The sauces were good and it comes with house made pickles and salad on the side.
Overall, I enjoyed my first experience at The Kimchi Project. The place is beautiful and the food choices were quite new and interesting to me. The prices were a bit on the high side though considering they weren’t big portions. However, I’d still go back to try more of what this place has to offer.
I highly recommend you get a table at the back but if there are none available, the front part has this gorgeous living wall too. If you’ve been here, let me know what else you recommend I order for next time.

I’ve been once to the Kimchi Project for lunch and ordered the Kimchi Fries. To be honest, they were a little underwhelming. I was like “where is all the kimchi?” So they gave me some more kimchi, at no extra charge which was nice. I don’t think I would order the fries again though. I did however love their sparkling watermelon drink – so delicious! And my friends said the beef salad is very good too 🙂

I love waffle fries plain or not so I didn’t mind either way and I was just happy the kimchi wasn’t spicy too because I have a low tolerance to spicy food but I agree, it didn’t have as much. Portions were smaller than expected too. Still keen to go back though. 🙂
