Today, I’m talking about a product I never thought I’d use. But since it came inside the Beauty Review September Beauty Box, I thought I’d give it a go.
The product is the Schwarzkopf Nordic Blonde Lightening Spray. I have been using this since getting the Beauty Box so which has been almost two months ago.
If you want to know my review, continue reading.
This is what the bottle and box looks like. I don’t know if this is a new product or not. I haven’t seen this in stores before but it’s not like I’ve ever looked for it either.
Honestly, when I first saw this in the BR Beauty Box, I wasn’t that excited and I thought it would be the product I wouldn’t use. The ‘Nordic Blonde’ in the name put me off because I have very dark hair and I don’t ever want to go blonde.
However, I read the info at the back and realised that you can still use this if you have darker hair. The box does say this isn’t suitable if you have more than slightly grey hair though.
This product is meant to lighten your hair colour by up to two levels but it really depends on how much you apply and how often you apply it. The instruction was to reapply the product up to 5 times within 2-3 days in between until you get your desired results.
Personally, I applied this after I had a shower when it was slightly damp and went on with my usual hair routine which is twisting my hair and securing it with elastics then sleeping with it so that I have natural-looking wavy hair in the morning. I applied it twice a week for the first two weeks then I went down to just once a week.
Within the first application, I already saw a difference the day after. I was surprised at how fast it worked and I got slightly addicted to my lighter hair.
The spray bottle makes it easy to apply to the hair and it’s a good mist as well. As for the smell, I didn’t like it at first because it has a slight chemical-scent but after a while, I didn’t really care. It’s not that strong in my opinion and it didn’t linger either.
This is what it looks like from the back. I love it. I only applied it from the bottom half of my hair and never at the roots. I wanted a more highlight effect.
You can definitely tell that my hair is lighter. I forgot to mention above that I’ve never dyed my hair so this is a first. I never properly dyed my hair because I wouldn’t like the maintenance of it. I’m pretty lazy when it comes to my hair (I don’t even straighten or curl my hair using tools at all anymore) and I know changing my hair colour would take time, effort and money that I wasn’t willing to invest in just yet.
The reason why I like this Schwarzkopf Lightening Spray so much is because it’s easy and I don’t have to sit in a salon or wait an hour or so for hair dye. It’s a quick way to lighten your hair and I’m all for that!
I wish I took before photos of my hair but I completely forgot. However, if you look back on my old outfit posts, you can see that my hair is pretty much black. This Floral Dress OOTD one is a good example. The last photo in that post shows my very dark hair styled the same as above.
So far, I’m truly embracing having lighter hair and I think it’s perfect for summer too. I have been warned by a few friends to be careful about using hair lightening products though because it could be damaging to the hair.
I have stopped spraying after 4 weeks because I liked how light my hair has become and to let me hair “breathe” from whatever chemicals this lightening spray has. It does say on the box that this washes out eventually after 28 washes. Although I’ve stopped spraying my hair, it’s still light and I haven’t noticed it fading that much.
To make sure I don’t damage my hair too much, I’ve also been using this Mad for Keratin Hair Treatment. I got for $2 at Kmart and I actually really like it. It smells great and leaves my hair soft. The packaging is handy in the shower too.
The only other hair product I use is sea salt spray and I’ve been using the Toni & Guy Sea Salt Texturising Spray I got from NZ Fashion Week. This smells really good so it also washes out the scent of the lightening spray. I use this to help have the natural wavy hair look .
Overall, I love this product and I recommend it if you don’t want the full commitment to dyeing your hair but want to know what it’s like to have a lighter shade. Just make sure you don’t over-do it. I don’t think it’s damaged my hair but if you use heat tools, that may add to it too.
If you want to try this out for yourself, it’s $12.99 and you can try search it in Farmers, supermarkets and pharmacies.
Have you tried any hair lightening products before? Let me know your experience if you have. If you haven’t, is it something you’d consider? I’m quite interested because I’ve heard mixed views about using hair products like this.

I love this particular spray and have been using it with hairdryer heat for at least 10 years now with no side effects or damage. When it has gone off the shelves I have tried others but none compare. My hair is short, regularly cut and naturally blonde (now a little white). G1 is great to give my roots a little pep up, particularly useful during the colder months and when I spend long periods inside during the daylight hours. No need for expensive hairdresser treatments as a result. Thanks Megan, good to see it works on dark hair too!

I’ve only ever had my hair lightened by the pros, vs dying it dark myself a fair few times. This looks lovely, not at all damaged!

Thanks Lena! One day I’ll take the plunge and get my hair dyed professionally but for now this is enough to do the trick.

It’s so expensive to go somewhere good, that’s why my hair is back to my natural-ish colour!

Exactly! The upkeep is another thing too because if I get my hair dyed to a lighter colour, my roots would look terrible. My hair grows fast too. I always said I’ll only dye my hair properly when I have a lot more grey hairs. haha. I’ll keep the black for as long as I can.

Looks gorgeous on you!! I used to use it when I was at college actually but I had a disaster with it once and ended up with orangey hair that looked awful so I stopped trying!! Not sure what went wrong, but being a teenager I probably over did it!

Thank you Nicola! 🙂
I’ve never heard of hair lightening sprays before I got this in the beauty box. I don’t know why but I’ve heard bad experiences of others now. It’s definitely easy to put too much on and cause damage to the hair. I have been cautious though so I think it’s been alright.

Eek I used to use these when I was younger, however I was warned my by hairstylist that because the bleaching-products stay on your hair so much longer, it can be damaging, so watch how often you use it 🙂

Thanks Megan! I was warned by a hairdresser friend too when I posted it first on Instagram saying similar things. I have stopped using it and I didn’t apply too much. I can see why it could be damaging but since my hair hasn’t been dyed before and I don’t use heat on my hair at all, it doesn’t seem to have done too much damage. I hope so anyway 🙂
